Drive-in Theaters as an Affordable Family-Night Out

About the Overall Project: During my job interview for The Penny Hoarder, I pitched a multimedia project about drive-in movie theaters as an affordable family night out. The pitch resulted in two stories (explained below) with original photography, a video and an interactive graphic.

The Silver Moon Rises as the Sun Sets Over Other Drive-In Theaters

About this Project: The story chronicles the Silver Moon Drive-in Theatre, a family-owned business passed on from grandfather to grandson.

Roles: Photojournalist, video journalist, drone pilot, video editor and image research

Sharon Steinmann, who was Director of Photography, advocated for and assisted with the video.

Tools: Adobe Premiere, Photo Mechanic, Adobe Photoshop

Key Result: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the video consistently ranked in the top five of YouTube videos about drive-in theaters.

Drive-In Theaters by the Numbers

About this Project: Drive-In Theaters by the Numbers is an interactive guide that provides The Penny Hoarder’s readers information about drive-ins across the United States. The infographic accompanies a story about how to get the most out of your drive-in theater experience. The graphic has been updated twice. I adapted the top part of the graphic for our daily newsletter and community (above).

Roles: Data collection, data analysis, graphic design, map design, and historic research

Challenge: The idea for an infographic was turned down during my initial pitch. I developed the concept as a passion project on my own time. After showing the mockup to an editor, I was given the green light to finish it.

Key Result: The average time readers spent on the story page increased more than 250 percent after the story was updated with the graphic.
