The orbiter's first mission was August 30, 1984. A total of six shuttles—Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Endeavour and Atlantis—have been a part of the fleet. Enterprise only flew test flights, never leaving Earth's atmosphere, in the late 1970s. Columbia was the first space shuttle to launch into orbit on April 12, 1981. The orbiter broke apart during its reentry to Earth's atmosphere in 2003. Challenger exploded in 1986 due to a faulty o-ring.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://chriszuppavisuals.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/shuttle-bugs_15-2.jpg</image:loc><image:title>SP_339528_ZUPP_Shuttle</image:title><image:caption>Spectators watch from the banks of the Indian River as Discovery gains height on its final space voyage after lifting off from launchpad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://chriszuppavisuals.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/shuttle-bugs_14-2.jpg</image:loc><image:title>SP_339528_ZUPP_Shuttle</image:title><image:caption>Beachgoers at the Cocoa Beach Pier watch as the space shuttle Endeavour emerges from a low cloud coverage during its 25th and final launch on May 16. John Hebda of Apopka (not pictured) attended the launch with his wife, Nondas. A sports fan, Hebda said if he had to choose between seeing all the major sporting championships and a space shuttle launch, it'd be an easy decision. "I'm happy I saw this," Hebda said. "This is a once in a life thing." His wife added: "God bless the astronauts and keep them safe."</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://chriszuppavisuals.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/shuttle-bugs_11-2.jpg</image:loc><image:title>SP_339528_ZUPP_Shuttle</image:title><image:caption>Jeff Cook of Alexandria, Va., staked out a front-row seat on the banks of the Indian River to see Discovery's final launch, scheduled at 4:50 p.m. Moments before the orbiter took off, Cook worried that it would be scrubbed as he listened carefully to the news. It wasn't an unfounded fear. Discovery's launch had been delayed from the fall the previous year to February this year. Launches are often canceled due to weather, mechanical problems or other unforeseen circumstances. After hours of anticipation, tourists can leave deflated and without that experience of feeling the booster rocket's engines roar shortly after blastoff. Fortunately, Discovery took off. "It was—God—it was more amazing that I expected," Cook said. Then he added, "I'm glad I brought the radio."</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://chriszuppavisuals.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/shuttle-bugs_10-2.jpg</image:loc><image:title>SP_340918_ZUPP_Shuttle</image:title><image:caption>Amelia Fox (left) and her husband, Charlie Fox of Mississippi State University (cq) are hopeful that Atlantis will launch.
